History
The Program on Peace and Development grew from a range of programming and research initatives taking place at Yale University. Below is a historical account of a few relevant public programs organized by faculty and staff now associated with the Program.
Democracy, Identity, and Civil Society
(September 24- November , 2020)
A virtual convening of emerging leaders in community development and politics in online discussons with senior voices from academia, business, and government about the challenges ahead. Specifically, these conversations will focus on how the geopolitical situation, and the consequences of the pandemic, will impact political and civil systems. The series acknowledges a collective investment in emerging leaders committed to the advancement of democracy in particular with the contexts of the United States, Northern Ireland, and Ireland.
In the Name of Peace: John Hume in America Film Screening and Discussion

Filmmaker Maurice Fitzpatrick presented his film (originally programmed as part of the 20 Years of Peace Conference) which chronicles John Hume’s approach to politics in Northern Ireland in coordination with senior political figures in US. The film includes wide-ranging interviews with President Clinton, President Jimmy Carter, British Prime Ministers John Major and Tony Blair, as well as many US Senators and Representatives and Irish leaders. John Hume ultimately earned the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in 1998 with David Trimble.
Twenty Years of Peace: Progress and Possibilities in Northern Ireland Conference

A one-day public conference that addressed 20 years since the passing of the Good Friday agreement. The conference brought together key players in the negotiation process including Senator George Mitchell, as well as other prominent figures such as former Prime Minister Bertie Ahern and General John de Chastelain. Other speakers and discussants included faculty from Queen’s University Belfast, prominent business figures from Northern Ireland and community builders. The conference began with a casual conversation between conference speakers about shared goals and ideals to be derived from the conference.
