Rachel Madera

2026 Yale & Slavery Teachers Institute Cohort Member

My name is Rachel Madera, and I am a fifth grade reading and humanities teacher in Hamden Public Schools who is passionate about building meaningful connections between students, schools, and the communities they serve. With nearly two decades of experience working in nonprofit organizations and a variety of school settings, I bring a community-centered approach to education and youth development.

I combine my academic background in sociology and elementary education to design thoughtful programs that support students both inside and outside the classroom. I believe learning is most powerful when it reflects students’ lived experiences and strengthens their connection to the world around them.

At my current school, I serve on the literacy committee, collaborating with colleagues to strengthen reading instruction and foster a love of literature among students. Previously, I created and implemented a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) program at my former school, helping to cultivate a more inclusive and supportive learning environment.
Outside of the classroom, I enjoy reading and dancing. Although I once imagined a career in the music industry, I discovered that my true passion lies in working alongside my community.
In the future, I hope to design curriculum and programming that connects community organizations with schools to support students and families.
