I am a second grade teacher at Savin Rock Community School (SRCS) in West Haven, Connecticut. It is an urban school with approximately 500 students. I teach all subjects excluding history, as history is integrated in our ELA and science curriculum. I utilize the Benchmark curriculum and children-catered books when teaching about race, and always try to include a social and emotional learning (SEL) aspect during the lesson. In addition, I look for ways to have my students complete fun/creative writing assignments that will assist them in their retention of the content.
For my revision goal, I plan to introduce my students to the story of Harriet Tubman. Tubman held many roles that propelled her into the heroic individual she became. Due to this, she was able to save many enslaved people from meeting an untimely end. My goal is to introduce Tubman’s bravery to my students during Black History Month (BHM)– a month that is dedicated to resilience, reflection, and fortitude. I believe that this project will help my students further understand the importance of gaining physical, mental, and emotional freedom in a time of heavy oppression.
