Join the Gilder Lehrman Center and New Haven Museum for a special afternoon conversation in collaboration with the national We Want More History! initiative.

Featuring contemporary history stewards connected to the New Haven Museum’s Unfinished Revolutions exhibition, this panel will explore the importance of preserving and sharing the diverse perspectives that shape New Haven’s stories.

The Black Schooner: Rebellion on the Amistad, A Graphic Novel

Internationally renowned historian, filmmaker, playwright, and activist Dr. Marcus Rediker and award-winning artist David Lester will launch the publication of their new graphic novel.

Offering a powerful visual experience, the graphic novel carries readers from the rebellion by 53 people from Sierra Leone on the Amistad in 1839, to the resulting trials that achieved an unexpected international victory for the abolitionist movement. The Black Schooner re-centers the West African rebels as the primary actors in their own freedom story while presenting their tale of liberation and social justice to new readers in a new format.

Schedule
- 4 pm: A Conversation with Educators and the Authors
about this educational resource and teaching “history from below”

- 5:30 pm: Reception 

- 6 pm: Public Program (open to all; educators are invited to both)
Rediker and Lester will share insights and discuss the interpretation and behind-the-scenes decisions that guided the visual storytelling in this new medium 

Signed copies of The Black Schooner: Rebellion on the Amistad by David Lester and Marcus Rediker, and edited by Paul Buhle, will be available for purchase.

and the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition.
