Fernando Corvisier

Fall 2025 Fulbright Distinguished Visiting Scholar in Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences

Fernando Corvisier received his early musical education at the Lorenzo Fernandez Music Academy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Following his graduation, he was awarded a scholarship by the Brazilian government to pursue advanced studies at the École Normale de Musique Alfred Cortot in Paris, where he studied under the guidance of Edson Elias and Germaine Mounier. During this period, he participated in numerous European music festivals, performing as both a recitalist and a chamber musician.

He later continued his studies at the New England Conservatory in Boston, earning a Master’s Degree in Piano Performance. In 1988, he was awarded the IV Eldorado Music Prize, Brazil’s foremost music competition, which led to invitations for recital appearances in major concert halls throughout the country. In 1994, he was awarded the Artist Diploma from the Hartt School of Music, where he studied with the distinguished Brazilian pianist and pedagogue Luiz de Moura Castro.

In May 2000, Dr. Corvisier completed the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Houston, studying with internationally renowned pianists Abbey Simon, Horácio Gutiérrez, and Ruth Tomfohrde. From 2000 to 2001, he served as a professor in the postgraduate department at the University of Rio de Janeiro.

Since 2002, he has been Associate Professor of Piano at the University of São Paulo. In addition to his teaching, he has been an active scholar and performer, presenting lecture-recitals on the piano works of Brazilian composer Almeida Prado at numerous conferences. His academic contributions include presentations at the International Symposium on Performance Science in Vienna and at the University of London.

As a performer Fernando Corvisier has appeared as a soloist with leading orchestras in Brazil and abroad. He also collaborates with his wife as part of the Duo Corvisier a piano ensemble specializing in four-hand and two-piano repertoire.
