Richard Velazquez

Richard Velázquez Perales is a Ph.D. student in the Department of History. He is primarily concerned with the ideas of race, indigeneity, and mestizaje in the Bajío region of Mexico. More specifically, he investigates indigenous assimilation and the creation of the mestizo identity. Displacement, societal structuring, and the creation of new identities prior to and during the colonial period also command his attention.

Richard Velázquez Perales graduated from the University of North Texas in 2014 with a B.A. in History, International Studies, and Spanish. He also hold an M.A. in History from the University of Oregon, where he studied the intersections of rural to urban and transnational migration in 20th century Mexico.
