Explainer: Small Island Developing States & Global Challenges

Jenelle Lee, March 2026

Small Island Developing States (sids) are often described as climate-vulnerable, yet their challenges extend beyond climate alone. Many island nations—often understood as “large ocean states”—depend on marine ecosystems for food, livelihoods, and cultural identity, while confronting overlapping pressures including debt, water insecurity, and economic dependence. Strengthening resilience requires climate finance, ocean-centered policy, and greater recognition of local and Indigenous knowledge.
