Global Table Fellow: Zen Chef Jeong Kwan
Event Details
This fall semester, the Council on East Asian Studies, in collaboration with Yale Schwarzman Center, Yale Hospitality, and MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies, welcomes the Venerable Jeong Kwan Seunim as the MacMillan Center's third Global Table Fellow.
As part of her visit, Venerable Jeong Kwan and her chefs will be partnering with Hospitality chefs to create Korean Temple-food inspired meals to share with the Yale and New Haven community.
The first of these will be a dinner on October 22nd with a live conversation and Q&A with Venerable Jeong Kwan herself. Please find registration instructions at the link above. If you need technical assistance with registration or require accessible accommodations contact ysc.info@yale.edu.
In addition to this dinner, Yale Hospitality will learn a number of other recipes from Venerable Jeong Kwan to be served at the Rooted Station in the Commons later in the academic year.
Venerable Jeong Kwan
A renowned Zen Buddhist nun and chef, Jeong Kwan is celebrated for her mastery of Korean temple cuisine and sustainable eating practices. Featured on Netflix's Chef’s Table, she draws global attention for her unique approach to cooking, using only ingredients she grows herself. Her new book is out now.
During her residency, Jeong Kwan will engage with the community, sharing insights into sustainable culinary practices, and showcase a dinner with a menu inspired by her philosophy. Her visit promises to illuminate the connections between sustainability, health, culture, and community.
Global Table Program
Global Table, a collaboration between the Yale MacMillan Center, the Yale Schwarzman Center, and Yale Hospitality, aims to illuminate the connections between sustainability, health, culture, and community. It centers around bringing culinary thought-leaders from around the world to campus. While in residence, each visitor trains staff, connects with students and researchers, and offers remarks followed by a reception with a menu inspired by the chef.
