Fiona Shen pursued her passion for Arts and Ideas at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where she received her bachelor’s degree with the highest distinction as a James B. Angell Scholar. Fiona’s research delves into the transformation of Chinese identity through the lenses of ethnicity and gender, dissecting the roles of literary expression, socio-political reforms, and storytelling medium in this metamorphosis. Her projects include exploring the emergence of queerness and neoliberal desires in post-socialist cinema, examining wartime Slavic films as pseudo-documentaries that capture the power dynamics and violence of WWII and the Yugoslav Dissolution, narratological analyzing the characterization of Guan Yu in the Three Kingdoms games, and assessing the fidelity, immersion, and syncretic allegories of the TV adaptation of Journey to the West. In addition to her academic work, Fiona volunteered as a therapeutic art facilitator at a federal prison and a community high school in the Detroit area. In her spare time, she enjoys listening to and composing music, reading novels, and engaging in MUDs and ARPGs.
