Tian Hsu
Tian is a sophomore intending to double major in Architecture and BA Mechanical Engineering with a certificate in Energy Studies. Her interests lie at the intersection of architecture, infrastructure, and urban planning, specifically with a view to designing more sustainable future cities.
As a student from London, UK, Tian uses her knowledge and understanding of European cities and cultures to reflect on how this has shaped both metropolitan and vernacular landscapes in America. Last summer Tian was awarded the Richter Summer Fellowship which she used to travel around France for a personal project titled “From Nimes to Arc-Et-Senans, Paris, and New Haven: A Study of Classical Architecture and its Influence on Neoclassicism.” The outcome was a series of photographs, drawings, and paintings inspired by the intersection and contrast of Neoclassicism across France. Tian also spent the summer in Cité Universitaire, Paris taking a course titled “Paris Transformations: Landscapes, Gardens and Urban Parks.” The course studied the development of green spaces in Paris and the role of public policies.
Outside of class, Tian does graphic design for FUSE fashion magazine and various design work for DAY (Design at Yale). She is also in an engineering team building a solar charging station as part of a wider initiative implementing more solar charging stations on campus.
