In this presentation, Patrick will present insights from the sixth chapter of his dissertation. Focusing on rural marronage, the chapter is entitled “‘Altho’ Not a Carpenter, He had a Trunk Full of Carpenter’s Tools’; The Struggle To Remain Fugitive.” It explores how fugitives from slavery in early nineteenth century Trinidad sustained themselves as they avoided capture. It centers the ongoing connections between enslaved people and fugitives to sustain flight. In doing, it seeks to build upon recent works centering fugitive subsistence strategies in the plantation Americas.
