Seminar Description: The Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) conducts large scale primary data collection. CMIE has created the largest integrated database of the Indian economy and conducts the largest survey to estimate household incomes, patterns of spending and savings. Mahesh Vyas, MD and CEO of CMIE will speak about the data that they are producing and in particular about the databases that could be of particular interest and use to academics conducting quantitative empirical research in the fields of political science, economics and sociology. This includes the Consumer Pyramids Household Survey, a new database that offers a series of estimations of household income, the pattern of expenses, sources of borrowing, a pattern of investments and ownership of assets of households in India. The estimations are based on India’s largest panel household survey consisting of over 150,000 households from over 300 cities and a hundred rural regions. A complementary database to Consumer Pyramids is the State of India. This offers time-series data on key economic and socio-economic indicators on the 36 states and union territories of India. CMIE data is used by several academic institutions including the National Council for Applied Economic Research, Oxford University, National University of Singapore, Harvard Business School, IIM-Ahmedabad, IIM-Bangalore, and IIM-Kolkata. Its databases have been used for studies on the impact of demonetization on the Indian economy and households, drivers of the firm growth, energy productivity across states, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on unemployment across caste and gender lines, among others.
