Five Million Dollars Pledged to Fox International Fellowship Program
January 24, 2002. New Haven, CT � Joseph C. Fox, a member of the Yale College class of ‘38, has pledged five million dollars to the Fox International Fellowship Program, an initiative of the Yale Center for International and Area Studies. This pledge represents the second gift of this size from Mr. Fox, the first having been made in the spring of 2000.
The Fox International Fellowship Program, established by Mr. Fox in 1989, organizes student exchanges between Yale University and leading universities in several countries. Its objective is to identify and further develop outstanding young men and women, both in the United States and abroad, whose leadership potential in a range of fields is such that they will contribute to peace and stability in the world.
Initially, the fellowships supported graduate student exchanges between Yale and Moscow State University (Russia). Since then, the Program has grown exponentially to include similar arrangements with Cambridge University (England), the Free University of Berlin (Germany), Fudan University (China), the University of Tokyo (Japan), El Colegio de Mexico (Mexico), and Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris (France). It now includes students who have just completed their undergraduate education. Fox Fellows’ fields of study include law, economics, finance, business, political science, international relations and contemporary history.
The Fox International Fellowship Program serves the international community and the cause of peace by training tomorrow’s leaders, giving them the background to assess situations knowledgeably and the capacity to hopefully make well informed decisions in their later careers that will positively impact global policies and international relations. The Program utilizes international scholarly exchange as a medium through which promising young public intellectuals and future leaders pursue academic work in other countries where they are immersed in the local language and culture.
In June 2001, Mr. Fox was elected a Fellow Commoner by Cambridge University for his work with the Fox International Fellowship Program in recognition of the relationship that has been established with the University in that context. Originating in the 16th century, this designation is an honor granted to show special appreciation to individuals who have supported Cambridge University in extraordinary ways. There have been only seven Fellow Commoners elected to date, one of the first was Oliver Cromwell. Mr. Fox is the first American to be so honored with the designation. He was invited to Cambridge in November for the induction ceremony.
A retired international investment banker and partner of Kidder, Peabody & Co., Mr. Fox has been extensively engaged in corporate, philanthropic and educational activities throughout his career. He is an active member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and speaks three foreign languages, including Russian. At Yale, Mr. Fox is a Sterling Fellow and a charter member of the President’s Council on International Activities. YCIAS is Yale University’s principal agency for encouraging and coordinating teaching and research on international affairs, societies and cultures around the world. YCIAS seeks to make understanding the world outside the borders of the U.S., and America’s role in the world, an integral part of the liberal education and professional training at the University.
It sponsors over 500 lectures, conferences, workshops and roundtables each year (most of which are free and open to the public). YCIAS includes nineteen research and educational affiliates, specializing in interdisciplinary and problem-oriented, comparative studies of different world regions. It also administers six undergraduate majors and four Master’s degree programs.
