Areum Ryu
Areum is a doctoral candidate at the Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies (GSAPS), Waseda University, Japan. Her research focuses on trade regulations, particularly non-tariff measures (NTMs). She explores the marginal trade impacts of NTMs by estimating regulatory distance and the associated costs, aiming to develop policy recommendations that enhance welfare by streamlining trade policies and reducing regulatory burdens.
 
Areum holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law with Cum laude from Handong Global University, Republic of Korea, and a Master’s degree in International Relations from GSAPS, Waseda University. Prior to joining the Ph.D. program, she worked as a manager at the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), where she oversaw investor relations and facilitated foreign direct investment in the energy sector in South Korea. She also served as an assistant manager at the Global Disease Eradication Fund at the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), managing partnerships with global organizations such as GAVI, the Global Fund, UNICEF, and Unitaid.
 
Building on her experience and knowledge, Areum is dedicated to conducting research that supports evidence-based policies, enhances international trade cooperation, and addresses practical challenges in global trade.
