Emmaline Monteith

Emmaline Monteith is a PhD candidate in Gender Studies at the Australian National University (ANU), focusing on the intersection of gender, technology, and activism. Her research explores the impact of online testimonies about a wide range of sexual experiences - including sexual violence, unwanted sex, and positive experiences - and their impact on systemic reform addressing sexual violence, while also examining the risks of backlash that frequently accompany these efforts. Amid a global gendered violence crisis, this work is especially timely, as it responds to the critical need for innovative prevention initiatives that not only combat sexual violence but also elevate survivors' voices. As a Research Assistant at the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership ANU, chaired by former Australian Prime Minister Hon. Julia Gillard AC, Emmaline contributes to research projects on gender inequality, including eSafety Commission-funded research on preventing gendered tech-based abuse. She also serves as Gender Adviser at Raise Our Voice Australia, leading initiatives to promote the inclusion of marginalised groups in politics and policymaking. Her published and forthcoming work spans digital activism, media engagement, and gendered violence, exploring how technology challenges and reinforces gender inequalities. Emmaline aims to develop strategies that centre survivors’ voices in efforts to combat gendered violence.
