Jack McMahon is a PhD Candidate at the Asia Institute within the Faculty of Arts at the University of Melbourne. His research interests revolve around diaspora studies, with a focus on those diasporas that navigate life away from their homelands without the current possibility of safe return. Having worked with refugee groups in the past, both in Australia and Indonesia, as well as consistently studying and engaging with Chinese society and politics, his overarching research has provided a synthesising of areas of both passion and interest. In addition to his research, Jack also works as a Graduate Research Academic Associate at the University of Melbourne, where he holds a position in the sociology discipline. A further research interest that Jack has revolves around democratic practices and the preservation of fair and transparent democracies throughout the Asia region. This has resulted in him being able to work within a coalition of Asian parliamentary monitoring organisations under the guise of creating the first transparency index for utilisation across Asia.
