Gilder Lehrman Center Invites Graduate Students to Apply for Fifth Annual Yale Public History Institute and Public History Graduate Fellows Program

 

The Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition (GLC) at Yale University, in partnership with the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), will host the fifth annual Yale Public History Institute, 2016. The program brings together graduate students from Yale and elsewhere, historians, and public history institutions—museums, historic sites, libraries—to explore and develop ways to interpret African American history and culture for the broader public. Yale Graduate Students are invited to apply to participate in the Institute as Public History Graduate Fellows.

During a five-day seminar at Yale University on July 10-15, 2016 , staff members of invited institutions, along with selected graduate students, and NMAAHC young professionals, will participate in sessions on historical content and interpretive issues led by Yale faculty members and pre-eminent public historians.

The Institute was developed in order to foster connections between public history institutions and the university by providing a platform to explore best practices in interpretation and public access, to create collaborative opportunities, and to provide students with practical experience in the public history field.

Last year’s speakers included: Institute organizer Richard Rabinowitz, president of American History Workshop; David W. Blight, Class of ’54 Professor of American History at Yale University and Director of the Gilder Lehrman Center; Christy S. Coleman, President and CEO of the American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar; Robert Harms, H. J. Heinz Professor of History and African Studies at Yale University; Jonathan Holloway, Professor of African American Studies, History and American Studies at Yale University; Lynda B. Kaplan, media director at American History Workshop; Fath Davis Ruffins, Curator, Division of Home and Community Life, at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.

To apply, please submit the attached application form and following materials electronically via email to gilder.lehrman.center@yale.edu no later than 5 p.m. on April 4, 2016.

Required materials:

  • Statement of Interest (no more than 2 pages)
  • One letter of recommendation (sent electronically by the recommender)
  • CV/Resume/List of Activities and Awards (no more than two pages, please)
  • Academic Record/transcript

It is the applicant’s responsibility to see that the complete application, including letter of recommendation and transcripts, reaches us by the deadline; applications cannot be considered without this information. Applicants will be notified of the Committee’s decision by late April 2016.

The GLC will pay all costs of lodging in Yale dorms and meals at Yale dining service. Each participant will pay his/her transportation to and from New Haven, CT.
