Charly Evon Simpson discusses her play "Behind the Sheet"
The Program for the Humanities in Medicine at Yale Medical School along with the Creative Writing Program and the Program for History of Science and Medicine at Yale College are pleased to welcome Charly Evon Simpson to discuss the making of her recent acclaimed play, “Behind the Sheets”.
“Behind the Sheets,” is a play inspired by the story of Dr. J. Marion Sims, a 19th century physician whose achievements relied on experimenting with female slaves. Ben Brantley of The New York Times called Behind the Sheets, which had its New York City premiere January - March 2019 at the Ensemble Studio Theatre, a “deeply affecting new historical drama.”
Simpson’s plays include “Jump,” “Scratching the Surface,” and “From a Girl Unknown.” Her work has been seen and/or developed with Ensemble Studio Theatre, Ars Nova, The Flee, The Lark, Page 73, National New Play Network through it Kentucky Center MFA Playwrights Workshop, National Showcase of New Plays, and others Simpson, an adjunct lecturer at SUNY Purchase is also a member of WP Theatre’s 2018 - 2020 Lab. The New Georges Jam, Primary Stages’ Dorothy Strelsin New American Writers Group, The Amoralists 18/19 Wright Club and The Pack’s current playwright-in-residence.
