Governor William Pitkin School in East Hartford is a great K-5 Elementary learning environment for all students. We currently have 340 students with an 86.5% minority enrollment. Earlier this year we were named a School of Distinction by the CT Department of Education.
I have been in the district for 33 years and teach fifth grade which includes all subject areas. My goal during this institute is to dive deep into understanding New England’s connection with slavery and how that has shaped our state both in the past and the present. I would like to explore different ways to balance stories of oppression with stories of resilience. I want to enhance my ability to teach this very important history in a way that engages my students in important questions that have relevance to their own lives.
