2025 Yale & Slavery Teachers Institute Cohort Member
My name is Jordan Jarvis and I teach an 8th grade United States History course at Martin Kellogg Middle School in Newington, Connecticut. The content of the course begins with the American Revolution and ends with Reconstruction. Next year, I will be revising our current curriculum and am hoping to incorporate more local history in our unit on slavery in the United States. More specifically, I'd like to develop more lessons using primary sources, specific perspectives and information on racism in the industries and cities of the north leading up to and during the Civil War. Additionally, I am hoping to improve upon my teaching of indigenous history, specifically the role these groups had in the American Revolution and the impact the era of Indian Removal had on our local populations (as opposed to the tribes of the Southeast, which I traditionally focus on). Resources for the study of local tribes are scarce and this program could be helpful in building a collection for teachers and students to utilize.
