Maria Frederick

2025 Yale & Slavery Teachers Institute Cohort Member

I am the Library Media Specialist at a rural 5-8 middle school, in Redding, Connecticut. I have the unique role of supporting teachers and engaging with students across all grade levels and subject areas. My current project focuses on enhancing eighth-grade American History lessons by deepening students’ understanding of slavery in New England, particularly Connecticut.
Through co-teaching and curriculum development, I aim to help students explore the historical, economic, political, and social factors that shaped slavery in the state. By engaging with primary and secondary sources, students will critically analyze slavery’s role in Connecticut and its broader impact on society.
Participating in the Yale and Slavery Teachers Institute will provide essential background knowledge, curated resources, and valuable connections to enrich these lessons, while also equipping me with new insights, strategies, and materials that I can bring back to support the educators in my school community. My goal is to bring history to life, and I am excited for this professional development opportunity.
