Tsion Agaro
Tsion (she/her) is a senior in Davenport College. She was born and raised in Atlanta but originally hails from Ethiopia. She is studying Ethnicity, Race, and Migration with a focus on Critical Data Studies, while also pursuing an advanced language certificate in Spanish. Tsion is interested in understanding the legacies of colonialism, particularly the way these legacies are visible in our technological world. After studying abroad in Colombia, she has been interested in understanding the labor used for AI technologies that are sourced from the Global South. She hopes to continue this research in Colombia post-graduation.
Additionally, she is interested in investigating the impacts of surveillance technologies, particularly facial recognition technology, in marginalized communities. As an intern for the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project, she reviewed NYPD policing practices and monitored ongoing technological developments. This past summer, she spent her time working for the Electronic Privacy Information Center where she researched the implementation of facial recognition in the United States and analyzed its harms in democratic societies.
