Faculty Support Funding Application Questions
Please read through the FAQs. Further questions and inquiries should be sent to macmillan@yale.edu.
Application Questions
- Who is eligible to apply? Yale faculty, including tenured, tenure-track, and non-tenured multi-year appointed lectors and lecturers, are eligible to apply. Postdoctoral associates, visiting scholars, and graduate/undergraduate students are not eligible to apply.
- Can my project be considered for multiple MacMillan funding sources? Yes. Within the application you may select all the funding sources for which you wish your project to be considered. Please do not submit multiple applications for the same project.
- Will a project that exceeds the budget limit of one of these opportunities be considered if I indicate that it relates to multiple opportunities? Yes. You may submit a proposal that requests funds from several sources – for example, a faculty research grant might be combined with a Kempf award if both research and convening are essential to your proposed outcomes. If you opt to do this, please ensure that the budget justifies the combined application.
- Can I submit applications for multiple, distinct projects? Yes. You should submit one application per project.
- I don’t see where to upload my CV/resume. Am I missing something? CVs/resumes are not required as part of the application.
- Do I need to be affiliated with a MacMillan Council or Program? These opportunities are open to all Yale faculty members. Those who intend to execute their project in collaboration with a council or program should confirm in advance that that group has the capacity to do so. If you are not affiliated with a council or program, you will be asked to indicate the individual(s) in your home department who will provide administrative support.
- What items are required to complete my application(s)? Our website lists all items needed to complete your application(s). Please use the provided PDF to prepare your responses, as applications must be submitted through the online portal. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
- Are late and/or incomplete applications considered? No. All applications must be complete and submitted via the application form by the deadline. Emailed applications are not accepted.
- If I received funding from one of these sources last year, am I eligible this year? Yes, all viable projects will be considered. However, faculty members who have not received the type of funding they’re applying for in the past two years will be given priority.
- Will my submitted budget be fully funded? Given increasing financial constraints, the committee may decide to offer smaller awards in order to support as many viable projects as possible.
- Do off campus events qualify for Kempf funding? Only on-campus convening will be covered. Applications that include both on- and off-campus events may qualify, but the committee may prioritize on-campus activities.
Award Questions
- When and how will I receive my awarded funds? Funds are available beginning the upcoming fiscal year. Your award letter will include a COA to which your project funds should be charged.
- Do my funds expire? Funds are to be used within the same fiscal year they are made available to you.
- What are the award acknowledgement requirements? If you receive funds from MacMillan, we will supply you with boilerplate acknowledgement text and a logo to use on publicity materials related to your project. Branding and acknowledgement questions should be directed to macmillan.communications@yale.edu.
- Do these awards require reporting? Yes. We will ask you for a very brief update on what these funds have allowed you to accomplish. In some cases, we may ask to feature your work for MacMillan news items or social media posts.
- Are there any legal requirements for travel awards? Yes. All international travel funded my MacMillan must comply with the requirements set by OGC – including, but not limited to, registering travel.
