Shouyue Zhang
Shouyue Zhang is a PhD candidate in history at the University of Melbourne, specializing in U.S. immigration and foreign relations history. His research investigates the agency of Chinese immigrants in Houston and Austin within the postwar U.S.–mainland China–Taiwan trilateral framework. By analyzing how these individuals and organizations navigated competing political identities from the Cold War to the present, Shouyue explores historical pathways toward grassroots diplomacy and the prospects for long-term peace in East Asia. His findings will be presented at two major national history conferences in 2026. Shouyue holds an M.A. from Indiana University Bloomington and a B.A. (Honors) from the State University of New York at Albany. Beyond his dissertation research, Shouyue serves as an editor for the Melbourne Historical Journal , a noted graduate publication established in 1961, and manages Studying History in the United States , a public-interest academic newsletter on WeChat with over 23,000 subscribers. His ultimate career goal is to teach U.S. history at the university level, dedicated to fostering cross-cultural understanding and revitalizing civilian friendship among the United States, China and Australia through academic exchange.
