Funding for Korean Studies

A new commitment will advance research and teaching across Korean Studies at Yale.

South Korean violinist Hyung Joon Won has donated $100,000 to establish an endowed fund for the benefit of Korean Studies at Yale.

Housed within the Council on East Asian Studies at the Yale MacMillan Center for International & Area Studies, Korean Studies  is a strong and growing program that advances research, teaching, and student engagement. The gift will deepen Yale’s capacity to focus on ancient Korean history and contemporary North Korea.

In addition to enriching faculty-led research, the commitment will bring visiting scholars and artists to campus and expand public programming. These efforts build on Yale’s longstanding strengths in East Asian Studies and support researchers as they investigate new questions and expand scholarship across the humanities and social sciences.

It is truly an honor to partner with Yale in advancing this meaningful initiative that promotes peace and understanding through scholarship.

Professor Hwansoo Kim, a Korean Studies scholar in the Department of Religious Studies, stated, “This generous gift, along with the future participation of more like-minded supporters, will greatly advance the development of ancient Korean studies and help scholars and students from North and South Korea, as well as the United States, seek peace through academic and cultural exchange.”

With deep appreciation for this generous donation, the MacMillan Center looks forward to scholarly activities and partnerships in Korean Studies in the years ahead.
