Visiting Faculty & Scholars

Representing a diverse set of disciplines and geographies, more than 100 visiting faculty and scholars call the MacMillan Center home each year.

Visiting faculty and scholars at the MacMillan Center play a vital role in enriching the intellectual environment for our students, faculty members, and other scholars. Their contributions come in many forms including through teaching, mentorship, and participation in colloquia and seminars. The MacMillan Center also provides a range of opportunities for exchanges and collaborations among visiting scholars and faculty, helping to facilitate connections that may not otherwise have been forged.

Key Information for Potential Visiting Faculty & Scholars

Visiting scholars are appointed at the MacMillan Center through one of two channels: faculty nominations or sponsored searches.

Faculty nominations come directly from faculty who are interested in collaborating and/or mentoring particular scholars.

Sponsored searches allow applicants to express interest in positions. For example, each fall, MacMillan Center councils and programs post advertisements for paid fellowships in their areas or topics of focus. These can be found on the Employment Opportunities section of the MacMillan Center website. In all cases, visiting scholars require the support of a faculty host affiliated with a council or program at the Center.

It should be noted that scholars will be required to demonstrate a source of external salary support, commonly via paid sabbatical from their home university or funding from an organization seeking to support research.
