The EU Studies Program is pleased to host the following colloquium:

"EU and Its Digital Challenges: checks and balances to ensure transparency and accountability in the digital age"

By Gaston Moonen, EU Fellow for the 2024-2025 year at the MacMillan Center of Yale University; chief editor at the European Court of Auditors (ECA)

Location: Luce Hall, Rm 202

While the USA seems to embark into an era of more deregulation for its high/big-tech companies, recent EU legislation shows a reverse trend exactly towards regulation, aimed to establish a framework in which high-tech, ranging from social media to AI oriented firms, need to operate to ensure transparency, fair treatment and fair competition. What have been the checks and balances that the EU has put in place to enhance big tech accountability and what role does the EU’s external auditor, the European Court of Auditor, fulfil and see for itself? Gaston Moonen will cover recent developments on EU legislation and instrumentalisation related to EU’s digital outlook and analyses progress and setbacks in this area.
