As a Art History major, passionate about cinema, I am interested to research how filmmakers borrow compositional strategies from painting—such as chiaroscuro, perspective, color theory, or pictorial framing—to shape narrative and emotion. I am interested in comparing films from different European traditions (e.g., Italian neorealism, French New Wave, Soviet montage) and examine how directors like Peter Greenaway, Sergei Parajanov, or Jean-Luc Godard consciously reference art historical movements.
This approach would allow you to bridge your background in art history with film analysis while engaging with questions of visual storytelling, perception, and artistic influence. Would you be interested in narrowing it down to a specific movement or filmmaker?
