Liana Schmitter-Emerson
Liana Schmitter-Emerson is a rising junior in Ezra Stiles College from Los Angeles, California. She is pursuing a degree in history, and is particularly interested in the democratic transitions of post-Soviet States, European integration, energy security, and the role that technology and the rise of AI play in European democratic processes. As a former Yale Directed Studies student, Liana is also interested in how adherence to political ideology drives policy. Liana’s coursework has primarily focused on Ukrainian history and twentieth century Eastern Europe, which partially motivated her membership in Yale’s European Horizons policy group. This summer, Liana is researching the role of targeted digital advertising in European elections (including in Spain, Greece, Montenegro, and Poland) with international NGO Who Targets Me. As a descendant of survivors of Nazi Germany, Liana is also studying the German language and plans to take courses at a German university in either spring or summer of 2024.
