My dissertation, Liberté, Égalité, Conformité: A Translation of Claude Vermorel’s Jeanne Avec Nous, Jean Paul Sartre’s Les Mouches, and Jean Anouilh’s Antigone, is a French-to-English translation of three plays written and performed in Paris between 1940 and 1945 during the Nazi Occupation of France. Each play in my collection was legally performed at a major French theater under German censors, yet, following the war, was immediately re-canonized as a so-called Resistance play that subversively encouraged anti-Occupation sentiment through the use of popular mythological figures. Through this dissertation, I interrogate how stable dramatic texts can contain shifting and contradictory political meanings when performed across different socio-political contexts and what this phenomenon reveals about the interplay between historical record and actors of resistance.
