Yale at ASEEES Convention 2024
While Yale celebrated its victory against Harvard in the highly anticipated sports event of the academic year, the university also made its mark in the academic sphere. Yale students, faculty, visiting scholars, and librarians took center stage at the annual convention of the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES), held in Boston from November 21 to 24, 2024. The conference attracted over two thousand scholars from across the globe to participate in thought-provoking discussions inspired by this year’s theme, “Liberation.”
Yale’s faculty and students contributed to 44 panels, covering topics ranging from Belarusian culture and literature to cinema in Uzbekistan, Russian propaganda, and the zoological gardens of the Romanov Empire. Discussions at the ASEEES convention also explored best practices for fostering scholarly and student networks in the field.
Ian MacMillen, Program Manager of the REEESNe network, and Carly Koebel, Senior Program Manager of the European Studies Council, played a central role in this dialogue during a roundtable on "The Opportunities, Costs, and Accessibility of Online and In-Person Networking in REEES and Beyond."
The convention also provided an excellent opportunity for community building and reconnecting. Yale’s Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies program, in collaboration with the REEESNe network, hosted the second annual Yale ASEEES Reception. The event brought together the Yale Russian, East European, and Eurasian Community of faculty, staff, and students to celebrate and acknowledge the great work that both programs do while encouraging future collaboration and network building.
