French officers attempt to free themselves from a World War I prison camp in what Janet Maslin called “one of the most haunting of all war films” and Jonathan Rosenbaum cited as “one of the key humanist expressions to be found in movies: sad, funny, exalting, and glorious.” Jean Gabin and Erich von Stroheim star in this Renoir masterpiece. In French with English subtitles.
