Join Bernard Gordillo, Lecturer in Christian Music Studies and Postdoctoral Teaching Associate for his talk on Mission Sensoriums: Sound, Colonization, and California Indians. This talk examines the role of sound in the Spanish, Mexican, and United States colonization of California. The cast suspended bell serves as a nexus between the sonic implications and consequences of colonization and later pervasive mission bell symbols representing “fantasy heritage” discourses in California.
