As apprenticeship and abolition occurred in the British colonies during the 1830s, African Americans began to include British Guiana in public emigration debates and conversations that typically centered Africa and Haiti. This talk will explore African American migrant experiences and views of emigration to British Guiana, which initially placed British Guiana as a beacon of hope and possibility for African Americans prior to emancipation in the United States.
