Former National Security Advisor Gen. James Jones To Speak at Yale

September 28, 2011. New Haven, CT — James Logan Jones, former U.S. National Security Advisor and a retired U.S. Marine Corps General, will present the George Herbert Walker, Jr. Lecture in International Studies at Yale on Tuesday, October 11.

Titled “National Security in the 21st Century,” his talk will be given at 4 p.m. in Henry R. Luce Hall, 34 Hillhouse Ave., Room 203. Sponsored by the MacMillan Center, it is free and open to the public.

During his military career, Jones served as Commander, U.S. European Command, Supreme Allied Commander in Europe from 2003 to 2006 and as the Commandant of the Marine Corps from 1999 to 2003. He retired from the Marine Corps in 2007 after 40 years of service.

After retirement, Jones remained involved in national security and foreign policy issues. In 2007, he served as chair of the Congressional Independent Commission on the Security Forces of Iraq, which investigated the capabilities of the Iraqi police and armed forces. Later that year, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice appointed him as special envoy for Middle East security. He served as chair of the Atlantic Council from 2007 to 2009, when he assumed the post of National Security Advisor, a position he held until 2010.

George Herbert Walker III, formerly the U.S. ambassador to Hungary, established this lecture series in 1986 in memory of his father, a graduate of the Yale Class of 1927. Previous George Herbert Walker, Jr. Lecturers in International Studies have included Paul Wolfowitz, George Schultz, Boutros Boutros-Ghali, Madeleine Albright, Brent Scowcroft, James Baker III, George Mitchell, Richard Holbrooke, Carla Hills, Strobe Talbott, Christopher Hill, Zbigniew Brzezinski, Richard Goldstone and John Major.
