Fox Fellowship celebrates a quarter - century of international scholarly exchange

September 18, 2013. The Fox International Fellowship Program — which boasts almost 500 alumni — marked its 25th anniversary with a luncheon in honor of Joseph Carrere Fox ’38 and Alison Barbour Fox, as well as the friends and supporters of the fellowship.

Based at Yale, the Fox Fellowship Program is a direct two way student exchange partnership between Yale University and 12 of the world’s leading universities in Russia, England, Germany, China, Japan, France, India, Mexico, Turkey, Israel, Brazil, and South Africa. There have been a total of 478 Fox Fellows over the life of the program. Founded in 1988 1989 by Joseph Carrere Fox ’38, the Fox International Fellowship Program began as a graduate and professional student exchange program and then came to include graduating college seniors. The fellowship was established to identify and support talented individuals who will be future leaders in their respective fields and who, by virtue of those leadership positions, will contribute to global policies and international relations.

The program’s partner institutions include Moscow State University, Sidney Sussex College at Cambridge University, the Freie University of Berlin, Fudan University in Shanghai, the University of Tokyo, Institut d’Études de Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po), Jawaharlal Nehru
University, El Colegio de México, Bo?aziçi University, Tel Aviv University, University of Cape Town, and the University of São Paulo.

The Fox Fellowship is “a vanguard program for Yale’s internationalization efforts,” says Peter Salovey, president of Yale, who attended the celebration.

The program is administered by the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale. A similar administrative unit manages the program at each of the 12 partner institutions.
