Janic Aguirre
Janic Aguirre is a senior at Branford College studying anthropology. Of Nicaraguan descent, he is interested in the study and research of ancient Mesoamerican societies and pre-Columbian writing. His currently research pseudo-glyphic writing found on ceramic vases across Guatemala, Western El Salvador, and Honduras.
Janic has excavated in Northern Belize through the Programme in Belize Archaeological Project, where he assisted Yale PhD student Michael Maddox investigate rural households at La Milpa Norte Chico. In El Salvador through the Proyecto Arqueológico Cuscatlán, a project led by PhD student Carlos Flores Manzano, Janic excavated post-classic Maya structures and prepared ancient pottery for analysis. Janic is enthusiastic about the history and development of writing in Mesoamerica.
On Yale’s campus, Janic studies both Spanish and Portuguese and is working towards an advanced certificate in Spanish. He has been active in various language tables: Galician, Japanese, Spanish, and Portuguese. Through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistant Program at Yale, Janic has helped local community members in New Haven file their taxes.
