Emily Sigman

Graduate School Student

Emily Sigman is a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow pursuing a joint Master of Forestry and Master of Global Affairs degree. As an undergraduate, Emily double majored in philosophy and international studies and graduated from Yale in 2011. Emily then spent five years as the co-founder of an urban forest farm and affordable housing cooperative in Colorado, while also working with a range of local, national, and international agricultural organizations.; ; Emily currently studies agroforestry–the blending of agriculture and forestry–from both a biophysical and socio-cultural perspective. Through her work, she seeks to advance the practice of agroforestry as a tool for socio-ecological restoration, and to illuminate pathways for the mutual understanding and flourishing of all life on earth.  Emily’s research aims to transform global landscapes and the relationships people have with those landscapes; She is the steward for the Yale Community Forest Garden, is a co-founder of the Yale Agroforestry Collaborative, and works on agroforestry sites around the world, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa.
