In this talk, Farasat will discuss how effective the Indian Supreme Court has been in performing its role as a protector of constitutional rights of its citizens in the last ten years, when a single party majority government was in power. The discussion will be anchored around specific decisions of the Indian Supreme Court, most of which Farasat has been part of as an advocate. Farasat will also be discussing whether we can see any changes in approach of the Supreme Court after the May 2024 elections, when India is back in the era of coalition government.

Shadan Farasat is a Senior Advocate practicing in the Supreme Court of India. He has completed his BA LLB (Hons.) from the National Law School, Bangalore and an LLM from Harvard Law School. He has practiced civil, criminal and constitutional law for the last nearly eighteen years at the Supreme Court of India. He has argued before six different Constitution Benches of the Supreme Court in the last two years and is passionate about constitutional law and civil liberties.
