Siddhartha Chandra Mukherjee
My academic journey began with a BA in History from Presidency College, Kolkata, and an MA in Modern History from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. I was trained to think and write about exchanges between disciplines during my M.Phil. at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta, where I began researching the history of India's infrastructure. I recently finished my doctorate at the Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, on the history of electrification in colonial and postcolonial India. I have presented sections of my work at Chicago University, Columbia University, and the London School of Economics and Political Science and was awarded the Inlaks Research and Travel Grant for conducting archival research in Britain. I have been a Teaching Fellow at Ashoka University, Haryana, where I gave lectures and organized discussion sessions on the history of modern India and Indian civilization. Before joining Yale, I was an Assistant Professor of History at Manikchak College in the Malda district of West Bengal. I taught the histories of India, China, Japan, Germany, and England. During my stint at Malda, I was a part of educational programs for rural Bengal schoolchildren and lectured on the history of science in English and Bengali. At Yale, along with teaching courses on the histories of science and consumption, I will also be working on widening my research in the history of infrastructures in South Asia.
