Renée Barbre
Renée Barbre is a PhD candidate in Music Theory at Yale University. She thinks about philosophical questions in intellectual history, and wonders if music can help to address them. Her dissertation examines Early Modern musical cryptograms (riddles, ciphers, and emblems involving music notation, text, and other related visuals), situating these quasi-magical objects within the intellectual history of the Scientific Revolution. She is honored to be Dan Harrison's final advisee. Renée holds an MA in Music Theory Pedagogy from the Eastman School of Music, a B.Mus. in Voice Performance from Houghton College, and various certificates from the Conservatoire de Bordeaux Jacques Thibaud. As a classically trained mezzo-soprano, she performs regularly as a church musician and as a member of Yale’s Schola Cantorum.
