Visiting Assistant Professor

Isadora Moura Mota is an Assistant Professor of Latin American History at the University of Miami. Her research focuses on Brazil and the Atlantic world, with emphasis on the histories of slavery and emancipation, transatlantic abolitionism, literacy, and the African diaspora. She is currently writing a monograph on the transnational history of abolition in Brazil. Placing Afro-Brazilians at the center of the political struggles shaping the Age of Emancipation, the project traces the development of a geopolitical imagination among people of African descent– both enslaved and free – in the context of Great Britain’s crusade against the slave trade and, especially, the American Civil War.
