South Asian Studies Council Annual Gandhi Lecture: title TBA, by Indira Jaising
Indira Jaising is the first woman to be designated Senior Advocate by the High Court of Bombay. Starting her career in civil law, she focused her attention on human rights generally and in particular on the rights of women. She received the Padma Shri in 2005 for distinguished public service. In 2009, she became the first woman to be appointed Additional Solicitor General of India. She has been an expert member of CEDAW (Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women) from 2009 to 2012. She was named 20th in the list of 50 Greatest leaders of the world by Fortune Magazine in 2018. She is the Founding Trustee of the Lawyers Collective. In 2018, she co-founded the legal news web portal www.theleaflet.in with Anand Grover.
