Gender and Policy Forum Launches with First Event on February 11

The Gender and Policy Forum is an initiative between Yale’s Council on Latin American & Iberian Studies at the MacMillan Center and LAIGN. It will be led by an executive committee of scholars with deep experience at the nexus of gender and policy: Professor of Anthropology Claudia Valeggia and Associate Professor of Comparative Literature Moira Fradinger from Yale University, Gisela Zaremberg from the Gender and Policy Program at FLACSO Mexico, and Amneris Chaparro from CIEG - UNAM .

The goal of the Forum is ambitious: to help bridge the divide between public policy and academic scholarship. To accomplish this, the Forum will draw on the expertise and connections of LAIGN’s members as well as high-level policymakers from government, international organizations, and civil society.

SESSION 1

Women and Development: Empowering Individuals, Building Communities

February 11, 2022 – 2 pm to 3.30 pm (ET)

This panel will analyze real-world interventions at the gender-policy nexus: (1) the problem of inequality of time for women, especially for those who do critical care work in our societies; (2) the reality of daily life for women as well as academic conversations in urbanism and economic feminism. The discussion will focus on innovative directions in emerging economies of care, especially in urban settings.

SESSION 2

Equality and Civil Society after COVID-19

March 4th 2022 – 2 pm to 3.30 pm (ET)

This discussion will consider both the history and current moment of gender-based politics and political organizing. The panel will examine a conceptually driven analysis of shifting models of feminist organizing in Latin America. Following the historical overview, it will focus on three critical gender-sensitive policy areas and will discuss the extent to which existing policies, practices, and paradigms in Latin America are well-suited to prevent reversals in women’s rights and ensure a just economic recovery.

SESSION 3

Achieving Equality through Law and Advocacy

April 8th 2022 – 2 pm to 3.30 pm (ET)

This discussion will feature the work of three graduate students who explore the challenges and opportunities of achieving equality through law and civil society organizing. Juridical approaches, public policies, and programs directed towards adolescent pregnancy have focused mostly on sexual and reproductive rights, leaving other questions about health, housing, and safety at the margins of policy and law.

Protecting Women Migrants in the 21st Century

May 6th 2022 – 2pm to 3.30 pm (ET)

Migration in conditions of duress or force is particularly dangerous for women. Panelists will consider the causes and consequences of women’s migration as well as situations of extreme violence that women may experience when seeking to cross borders. The discussion will focus on how governments can protect migrating women.

SESSION 5

Shattering the Glass Ceiling in Academia, Science, and Beyond

May 20th 2022 – 11am to 12.30pm (ET)

This panel will focus on the barriers that women in academia and particularly in the sciences face in seeking to be heard and have their ideas considered. This session will discuss how the seniority and salary gap between men and women can be closed while also delving into critical policy issues, including gender discrimination, gender violence, the difference in salary between men and women, career advancement, and more.
