One of the fundamental global economic shifts of the last 50 years has been the automation of work, through both robot adoption and the use of Artificial Intelligence. This development has raised many sociopolitical concerns thanks to machines’ ability to replace human labor. What are the consequences of this development for international integration? With support from the Leitner Program at the MacMillan Center, this conference seeks to enrich the academic and policy debate regarding the International Political Economy of technological change. In particular, it aims to contribute to our understanding regarding how to address its redistributive consequences of automation, its implications for sustaining citizens’ support for international integration, and its implications for the global governance of automation and of digital services (digital trade).
